Nguyen takes out his gun.

The gang leader laughs.

The gang members pull out their weapons and a shootout ensues.

Nguyen manages to take down most of the gang members, but he gets shot in the leg.

He falls to the ground, panting.

You’re finished, Nguyen.

Suddenly, Tuan appears from behind a stack of crates, holding a metal pipe.

TUAN
(speaking Vietnamese)
Leave my grandpa alone!

Tuan hits the gang leader with the pipe, knocking him out.

Nguyen looks at Tuan with pride.

You’re a brave boy, Tuan.

Tuan helps Nguyen up, and they walk away from the warehouse, hand in hand.

(laughing)
You can’t just walk away, Nguyen. You know too much.

Nguyen charges at the gang leader, throwing punches and kicks with precision. The other gang members join in, and a violent brawl ensues.

Nguyen fights with all his might, taking down one gang member after another. But he is outnumbered, and soon he is surrounded once again.

GANG LEADER
(smirking)
Looks like we’ve got you now, Nguyen.

Nguyen takes a deep breath and prepares for his final stand. He charges at the gang leader, and they engage in a brutal fight.

Nguyen emerges victorious, but he is badly injured. He stumbles and falls to the ground, gasping for air.

Tuan rushes to Nguyen’s side, tears streaming down his face.

TUAN
(grabbing Nguyen’s hand)
Grandpa, are you okay?

INT. NGUYEN’S HOUSE – DAY

Nguyen sits on the couch, looking uncomfortable, while his young grandson, TUAN, plays with his toys on the floor.

TUAN
(whispering to his toys)
Don’t talk to him. He’s scary.

Nguyen looks hurt but doesn’t say anything.

Later that day, Nguyen meets with his old friend, TRAN, at a local café.

TRAN
So, you’re a grandfather now, huh?

NGUYEN
Yeah. It’s not what I expected.

TRAN
What did you expect?

NGUYEN
I don’t know. Respect, maybe. Fear. But he’s just a kid.

TRAN
(laughs)
Yeah, they tend to be.

Nguyen looks at Tran, who is now a family man with a wife and kids.

NGUYEN
How did you do it, Tran? How did you become a good father?

TRAN
(sighs)
It wasn’t easy. I had to learn to be patient, to listen, to love. It’s not something that comes naturally to us, you know?

Nguyen nods, deep in thought.

TRAN
But it’s worth it. There’s nothing like the love of a child.

Nguyen looks at Tran, then down at his hands.

NGUYEN
I want to be a good grandfather, Tran. I just don’t know how.

TRAN
(smiles)
I can help you with that.

INT. NGUYEN’S HOUSE – DAY

Nguyen sits on the floor, watching Tuan practice his martial arts moves.

NGUYEN
(laughs)
You’re pretty good, kid.

Tuan looks up at Nguyen, surprised.

NGUYEN
You know, I used to be pretty good too. Want me to show you some moves?

Tuan nods eagerly, and Nguyen gets up, showing him some basic moves.

Later that day, Nguyen sits on the couch, watching Tuan play with his toys.

NGUYEN
You know, when I was your age, I didn’t have any toys.

Tuan looks up at Nguyen, curious.

NGUYEN
I had to fight for everything I had. But that’s not the way to live, Tuan. You don’t have to fight for love. It’s given freely.

Tuan looks at Nguyen, then smiles and hugs him.

TUAN
I love you, ông nội.

Nguyen looks surprised, then hugs Tuan back.

NGUYEN
I love you too, Tuan.

Nguyen looks up, tears in his eyes, as Tran watches from the doorway, smiling.

TRAN
(to himself)
Looks like you’re learning to be a grandfather after all.

Nguyen looks at Tran, then back at Tuan, smiling.

Nguyen has finally learned to be patient and loving with his grandson, and in doing so, has discovered the true meaning of family.

CONFRONTING THE PAST

FADE IN:

EXT. SAIGON, VIETNAM – DAY

Nguyen, a former gang leader, walks down the bustling streets of Saigon. He looks around, taking in the sights and sounds of the city he once ruled with an iron fist. He stops in front of a small noodle shop and looks inside. A young boy, TUAN, sits at a table, slurping up noodles. Nguyen smiles and enters the shop.

INT. NOODLE SHOP – DAY

Nguyen sits down across from Tuan and watches him eat.

NGUYEN:
You like those noodles, huh?

Tuan nods, his mouth full.

NGUYEN:
I used to come to this shop all the time when I was your age. The owner used to give me extra meat if I promised not to cause any trouble.

Tuan looks up at Nguyen, curious.

TUAN:
Did you cause a lot of trouble?

Nguyen chuckles.

NGUYEN:
More than I care to admit.

Suddenly, the door to the shop bursts open and a group of men enter. They are led by MR. LI, a rival gang leader.

MR. LI:
Nguyen! Long time no see.

Nguyen stands up, his hand instinctively going to his pocket where he used to keep his gun.

NGUYEN:
What do you want, Li?

MR. LI:
I want what’s mine. And I think you know what I’m talking about.

Tuan looks up at Nguyen, scared.

TUAN:
Grandpa, who is he?

Nguyen looks down at Tuan, then back at Mr. Li.

NGUYEN:
You leave him out of this.

MR. LI:
Oh, I don’t think so. You see, Nguyen, I know all about your little grandson here. And I know how much you love him.

Nguyen’s eyes narrow.

NGUYEN:
What do you want?

MR. LI:
I want you to do a job for me. And if you don’t, well…let’s just say I have ways of making you cooperate.

Nguyen clenches his fists.

NGUYEN:
I’m not doing anything for you.

Mr. Li smiles.

MR. LI:
We’ll see about that.

Mr. Li’s men grab Tuan and drag him out of the shop. Nguyen tries to follow, but they hold him back.

NGUYEN:
Let him go!

Mr. Li turns back to Nguyen.

MR. LI:
You have 24 hours to do what I ask. Or else.

The men leave, taking Tuan with them. Nguyen slams his fist on the table in frustration.

NGUYEN:
Tran! I need your help.

CUT TO:

EXT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE – NIGHT

Nguyen and Tran, a former gang member turned police officer, sneak into the warehouse where Tuan is being held. They see Tuan tied up in the corner, guarded by Mr. Li’s men.

NGUYEN:
We have to be careful. We don’t want to get Tuan hurt.

Tran nods.

TRAN:
I’ll take care of the guards. You get Tuan.

Nguyen nods and sneaks over to Tuan. He unties him and picks him up.

NGUYEN:
Come on, Tuan. We’re getting out of here.

But just as they turn to leave, Mr. Li enters the warehouse, flanked by his men.

MR. LI:
I knew you would come, Nguyen. You’re too predictable.

Nguyen sets Tuan down and steps forward.

NGUYEN:
Let him go, Li. This is between you and me.

Mr. Li laughs.

MR. LI:
Oh, I don’t think so. You see, I have a little surprise for you.

Mr. Li’s men bring out a large crate and open it. Inside is a bomb.

MR. LI:
You have two choices, Nguyen. Either you do what I ask, or I blow us all to hell.

Nguyen looks at Tuan, then back at Mr. Li.

NGUYEN:
I choose neither.

Nguyen grabs Tuan and runs towards the exit. Mr. Li’s men chase after them, but Nguyen is too fast. They burst out of the warehouse just as the bomb explodes, sending debris flying everywhere.

CUT TO:

EXT. SAIGON, VIETNAM – DAY

Nguyen and Tuan walk down the street, hand in hand. Tuan looks up at Nguyen, smiling.

TUAN:
That was so cool, Grandpa! You were like a superhero!

Nguyen chuckles.

NGUYEN:
I’m no superhero, Tuan. I just did what any grandfather would do to protect his grandson.

Tuan looks up at Nguyen, his eyes shining with admiration.

TUAN:
You’re the best grandpa ever.

Nguyen smiles, feeling a warmth in his heart that he hasn’t felt in years.

NGUYEN:
And you’re the best grandson ever.

Nguyen and Tuan continue down the street, their bond stronger than ever.

TRIUMPH

INT. NGUYEN’S HOUSE – DAY

Nguyen sits at the kitchen table, staring at a photo of his grandson TUAN. Tran enters the room.

TRAN
Nguyen, we need to talk.

Nguyen looks up, surprised.

NGUYEN
What is it?

TRAN
I’ve found out where Mr. Li is keeping Tuan.

Nguyen jumps up from his seat.

NGUYEN
Where? Tell me!

TRAN
It won’t be easy. Mr. Li has a lot of men guarding the place.

Nguyen nods, determined.

NGUYEN
I don’t care. I’ll do whatever it takes to get my grandson back.

TRAN
I know you will. But we need a plan.

Nguyen and Tran sit down at the table and begin to strategize.

CUT TO:

EXT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE – NIGHT

Nguyen and Tran approach the warehouse, weapons in hand. They take out the guards one by one, silently and efficiently.

CUT TO:

INT. WAREHOUSE – NIGHT

Nguyen and Tran make their way through the dark, maze-like corridors of the warehouse. They hear Tuan’s cries in the distance.

NGUYEN
We’re getting close.

Suddenly, they are ambushed by Mr. Li and his men.

MR. LI
Well, well, well. Look who decided to show up.

Nguyen and Tran stand their ground, ready to fight.

CUT TO:

EXT. WAREHOUSE – NIGHT

Gunshots ring out from inside the warehouse. Suddenly, the door bursts open and Nguyen emerges, holding Tuan in his arms.

NGUYEN
We did it!

Tran joins him outside, grinning from ear to ear.

TRAN
You were amazing, Nguyen.

Nguyen looks down at Tuan, tears in his eyes.

NGUYEN
I couldn’t have done it without him.

CUT TO:

INT. NGUYEN’S HOUSE – DAY

Nguyen sits on the couch, holding Tuan in his lap. Tran enters the room.

TRAN
What are you going to do now?

Nguyen looks up at him, a determined expression on his face.

NGUYEN
I’m going to be the best damn grandfather this kid has ever had.

Tran smiles, knowing that Nguyen has finally found what he’s been searching for.
